Hey friend! I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m Kayla, the face behind Scratch Made Simple – a homegrown space where I share the joys (and the chaos) of cooking from scratch, homeschooling my kids, raising chickens, and growing food right here at home.
My journey with fresh-milled flour started with a lot of stomachaches and a 30-day elimination diet. For years, I thought I had a gluten intolerance. I cut out bread, mourned pasta, and had to say “no thank you” to most desserts. But after a week in Guatemala and a phone call to a local food scientist, I discovered the real issue wasn’t gluten, it was the highly processed flour found on most store shelves here in the U.S.
Once I started milling my own flour (something my family’s been doing since the early ‘90s – I am a third generation miller!), everything changed. My body felt better and I could finally enjoy delicious bread, rolls, tortillas, and so much more again! These days, I make all my own baked goods and love helping others discover just how doable and delicious it can be.
But flour is just the beginning.
Around here, we also homeschool our kids, gather eggs from our backyard chickens, grow our own produce, and preserve as much as we can. I believe in the beauty of living simply, learning constantly, and feeding our families well, even if it’s a little messy along the way.
Scratch Made Simple is more than just a name. It’s a reminder that a full, faith-filled life doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Whether you’re curious about milling your own flour, looking for homeschool encouragement, or just want a peek at what’s growing in our garden this week, you’re always welcome at our table.
Let’s build a home that nourishes body, mind, and soul.
